Parents to Margaret and William Young who immigrated to Australia and settle in Sydney, New South Wales in 1963. Alexander Young also known as George Alexander founder of the Grapefruit and George Young from The Easybeats are related to Malcolm and Angus.
Malcolm Young was born Malcolm John Young on 6 January 1953 Glasgow, Scotland and brother Angus Young was born Angus McKinnon Young on 31 March 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Malcolm Young graduated quickly from acoustic to electric and picked up tips from his older brother George whenever the Easybeats returned from a tour. Malcolm began practising the guitar while at Ashfield Boys High School in Sydney. He worked for a bra company as a machine maintenance engineer after leaving school.
Angus Young only real academic interest was art which allowed him some freedom of expression. He would be practicing with Malcolm guitar. His mother brought him a second hand acoustic guitar. At the age of eleven he preferred to learn guitar by himself. Malcolm and Angus Young would received guitar lessons from his brother George, when on tour with the Easybeats.
In 1971 Malcolm Young put a few small bands together, and joined the Velvet Underground in Newcastle, Australia and left the band in 1972. They did cover versions of the Doors, Rolling Stones and the Who.
Malcolm Young heard about Ted Mulry from his brother George, after meeting him at Tokyo Song Festival in 1971. Les Hall and Herman Kovacs were former
members of the Velvet Underground. They became members of the Ted Mulry Gang in 1972,
the band renamed themselves as TMG in
1976.
Angus Young formed the Kantuckee the line-up were Rob McGlynn on lead vocals, Angus Young on guitars, John Stevens on bass, Trevor Young on drums from 1971 to 1973. Kantuckee renamed themselves as the Tantrum after second guitarists joined the band in 1973. The line-up was Rob McGlynn on lead vocals, Angus Young on guitars, Mark Sneddon on guitar, John Stevens on bass, Trevor Young on drums.
In 1973 Angus Young left Ashfield Boys High School in New South Wales, Australia. He went to work for a soft porn magazine called Ribald as a printer. The original uniform was reputedly from his secondary school, Ashfield Boys High School in Sydney.
Angus Young was performing with Tantrum, walked across the stage and tripped over the guitar lead, so he felt a right dick and he kept running across the floor. He made it look like a death scene, screaming all hell from the guitar. It was the only clap they got that night. Malcolm Young decided to form a new band after witnessing his younger brother wild stage antics, Malcolm Young asked him to join the band he was putting together.
Malcolm and Angus chose the name after seeing AC/DC on their sister sewing machine, the conversion of alternating electrical current into direct current perfectly conveyed their own guitar driven intensity and powerful stage presence. They sister Margaret Young suggested that Angus should wear a school
uniform on stage. The brothers are founder of the Australian hard rock band AC/DC.
The line-up were Malcolm Young
on rhythm guitar, vocals (ex-Velvet Underground, ex-Marcus Hook Roll Band), Angus Young on lead guitar (ex-Kantuckee, ex-Tantrum, ex-Marcus Hook Roll Band), Larry Van Knedt on bass, Colin
Burgess on drums (ex-Masters Apprentices), Dave Evans on lead vocalist.
